Virus Alert: Antivirus 2009

Antivirus 2009 is a new malware program, which is also a clone of Antivirus 2008 - a virus with various names and functions.

There are many of these programs infecting systems at a rapid rate, among them are System Antivirus 2008, Ultimate Antivirus 2008, Vista Antivirus 2008, XP Antivirus 2008 etc.
Antivirus 2009 uses trojans, such as Zlob or Vundo, to infect systems. These trojans lurk in various websites disguised as video codecs, and, upon entering the system, floods the user with popups and fake system notifications, supposedly to inform him of an infection.

Regardless of any previous infections, Antivirus 2009 will say the system is infected whether it’s true or not.

The point of this disinformation is to convince the user he is infected and therefore needs an antispyware program to dispose of the threat.

The user might click on one of the popups or notifications, all of which claim they will take him to a legitimate security tool, but try to make him purchase Antivirus 2009’s “licensed version” instead.

This program is malware and is a scam. Do NOT download it or attempt to purchase what it offers.

02/11/08 - Fake Microsoft Security Email Bulletin

The email claims to come from Microsoft and includes a link to what is supposed to be a patch for the issue however it is actually a malicious browser add-on (BHO.)

Always remember that you shouldn’t click on links or open email attachments if you are not expecting the email and know and trust the sender. It’s always advisable to directly visit web sites, instead of clinking on a link in an email, to confirm that the information in that email is correct.

01/15/08 - MS Patch & hhctrl.ocx Error Fix.

The recent .ANI emergency patch issued by microsoft: MS07-017: Vulnerability in GDI could allow remote code execution causes an HHCTRL.OCX error that you may now be seeing when your computer boots.

You need to ‘patch the patch.’ Find it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935448.

The problem concerns users with Realtek Audio. “The problem may occur after you install security update 925902 (MS07-017) and security update 928843 (MS07-008).

The Hhctrl.ocx file that is included in security update 928843 and the User32.dll file that is included in security update 925902 have conflicting base addresses. This problem occurs if the program loads Hhctrl.ocx before it loads the User32.dll file.”
